The Team

The HR Advisor, Africa works closely with and in support of other Africa Regional Office HR staff, primarily the Regional HR Business Partner (HRBP). In addition, this role collaborates closely with peers and HR colleagues in HR Global Operations (HRGO), Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, Organizational Development & Organizational Effectiveness, HR Strategic Planning & People Analytics, and the HRBP team to continuously evaluate and improve HR’s operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Your Role

The HR Advisor, Africa Regional Office has two main areas of responsibility. First as the primary HR contact for Africa based foundation staff across the continent primarily in South Africa, Ethiopia and Nigeria to resolve inquiries and requests for HR transactions. Second, this role is part of a global HR team and will partner across the HR function to ensures efficient and accurate execution of a variety of HR operational activities that are associated with the lifecycle of employees, contingent workers and job candidates. The HR Advisor, Africa understands and interprets HR policies and programs in order to provide excellent service to employees. They also serve a critical role in managing HR employee data in Workday and personnel files, including data entry, integrity, auditing and reporting. The advisor works closely with and in support of other Africa Regional Office HR staff, primarily the Regional HRBP. In addition, this role collaborates closely with peers and HR colleagues in HR Global Operations (HRGO), Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, Organizational Effectiveness, HR Planning & People Analytics, and the HR (HR Business Partner, HR Consultants and other Regional HRBPs and HR Advisors) team to continuously evaluate and improve HR’s operational efficiency and effectiveness.

This position reports to the Senior Manager, People & Business Enablement.

What You’ll Do

  • Comes with and continues to develop an understanding of HR compliance and other trends within Africa

  • Work in collaboration with the Regional HRBP to manage regional specific HR issues with staff and serves as a conduit that connects Africa based employees with other appropriate HR resources at Seattle headquarters

  • Responds to and efficiently resolves inquiries from employees and managers relating to HR policies and programs; engages HR Center of Excellence (COE) teams and Regional HRBP when needed for resolution

  • Provides exceptional support to employees on queries related to HR matters (benefits, mobility, etc.).

  • Ensures inquiries are managed and tracked in Zendesk; keeps all HR systems updated real-time as required for role

  • Manages employee and position data in Workday including data entry, integrity, auditing and reporting

  • Provides a wide variety of coordination oversight for activities supporting the employee lifecycle, including but not limited to: new hire set-ups for employees and contingent workers, employee relocation and work authorization, onboarding and orientation on HR policies, creation and management of employee files, Learning Management System (LMS) administration, separation agreements, employee and contingent worker departures

  • Collaborate with the Regional HRBP on the HR Rhythm of Business processes like Performance Partnership, Annual Compensation Review (ACR), Workforce Planning etc.

  • Partners with HRBP to impart trainings to new employees and managers on Performance Planning, ACR, Resilience trainings, etc.

  • Participates on regional and global HR projects and initiatives

  • Partner with the Regional HRBP on DEI and Culture building interventions for the regional office

  • Support with the local/regional vendor identification and empanelment/contracting process for various HR activities/interventions.

  • Support with Crisis/Incident Management activities

  • Partner with the Regional HRBP on the management of HR and foundation leadership visits to the regions

  • Reporting on HR activities on need basis

Your Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum 5 years of relevant HR progressive work experience

  • Global experience with a multinational organization highly preferred

  • Experience managing data in an HRIS, preferably Workday, including data entry, integrity, auditing and reporting

  • Experience with ticketing systems such as Zendesk preferred

  • Capable of becoming a subject matter expert in one or more HR system and/or tool used by the foundation; demonstrated ability to train and coach others to use HR systems or tools

  • Experience co-designing processes and workflows for an HRIS

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret, understand and explain HR policies, programs and processes

  • Familiarity with one or more HR specialties/COE

  • Outstanding customer focus with the business and employees of all levels

  • Highly collaborative with strong proficiency with English communications skills (written and verbal) and interpersonal effectiveness; able to interact effectively with individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds and styles

  • Detail orientation and accuracy

  • Strong planning, execution, coordination and organizational skills; very proficient at prioritizing and multi-tasking

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to deal with ambiguity; solid analytical skills

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use good judgment when dealing with employee requests and issues

  • Intermediate to advanced abilities with Office suite of applications

  • The ability to work independently to achieve results

  • Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located without visa sponsorship.
